I'm hearing rumors...
Tell me if they're true! There have been high-end clothing sightings at Target and we're not talking the lines from Paul & Joe, Luella Bartley, etc. We're talking Coach bags on display, Antik jeans, and Joe's jeans on the racks. What's going on? How are these things sneaking into Targets? Is that legal? Have any of you guys seen stuff like that at your local Target?

Review of Recent Purchases
If you reference here, here, here, and here, you'll be able to tell that I have been buying clothes like crazy for my favorite season, fall. I'm going to briefly review my purchases (letting you know if they're worth buying).
I'm Back post:
Mac & Jac One Button Swing Coat - probably my favorite fall purchase. It is a modern jacket with a vintage twist. I love the button, the cut, and the quality. Unfortunately, this coat is so popular that it keeps selling out. Keep a close eye on the Nordies site for your size to come in stock!
Ben Amun Pewter, Swarovski Crystal, Jet and Red Enamel Deco earrings - Worth every penny. They're the kind of earrings that will last a lifetime, plus you can't go wrong with the black and red combo. It works with so much!
Kimono-Sleeve Sweater Dress - Just got this today and am very pleasantly surprised with its quality. Ordering from Newport-News is really hit-or-miss, and as much as they try to be trendy, they're mostly a miss. However, this sweater dress is made from very high quality fabric, it drapes on the body gorgeous, and it won't give you sticker shock (Only $49). It's the perfect winter dress, and it combines the kimono and sweaterdress trend for fall.
Abaete for Payless Flats - I love these flats, but you will need to by foot petals to stick in the heels because they pinch a little bit.
Paul & Joe Owl Bag - I scored the coveted owl bag for retail even though it's sold out all over Oklahoma (thanks Monica!). Given my extreme love of owls (that pre-dates the current owl trend), this one is definitely going to stay in my purse collection for years to come.
Vintage Deadstock Lanvin Leather Bag - Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! And in absolutely mint condition. The leather is so supple and perfect. This is one classy bag. Its presence causes my Target bags look at it with jealousy in their eyes.
Vintage Pierre Cardin Clutch - Woah! The pictures on ebay did not even begin to do justice to how incredible this clutch is. It has a shoulderstrap inside, and it's HUGE! The color is gorgeous and the design etched into the lucite is really neat. I adore it!
Fendi Inspired Spy Bag - Big, versatile, and really "now." Loves it!
Oversized Hobo - This has been moonlighting as my backpack because it's so big. The only problem is that things get lost really easily in it. Boo!
Red Quilted Satchel - Not quite the vibrant red of the pictures, the color is definitely more muted. However, it matches my Abaete flats perfectly, so it's a keeper!
Stam Inspired Quilted Frame Bag - Classic shape means this gets a lot of action in my manic purse-switching rotation. Perfect for carrying when you want to complete an outfit with a "vintage" look.
Lace-Up Wedge Boots - I've been dying for lace-up boots, and these are perfect. I could do without the wedge, but it's not bad. I just hate being taller than I am.
Tartan Gloves - These are making everyone green with envy. Let me tell you, I lucked out finding them because it's been a bitch to find plaid gloves anywhere else. I love these so much. My Scottish grandfather would be so proud.
Vintage Red Peacoat - Holy hell did I ever score with this find! It's more perfect than I have words to describe. Originally marked at $175, I got it for $55. The cut is perfect, it's completely vintage (my favorite!) and the buttons rock. This will be the best winter ever.
Latest Fall Purchases post:
Scrunchy Socks - I've gone back for thirds and fourths on these. Once I saw how awesome they were in red and black I had to buy them in white and grey as well. I plan on layering them over leggings or wooly tights (how daring!). I'm definitely rocking the Marc Jacobs layered look this fall. :-)
UO Bubble Dress - For some reason this dress is ridiculously flattering on. It makes me look like a million dollars, and I can't figure out why. Since I'm tall this hits me like a tunic so I've been wearing it under jackets. I'm crazy about this dress!
UO Sweater Dress - This is a fun dress to wear. I wear it with rock t-shirts underneath and leggings and it looks pretty swell. It's very warm and the material is comfy.
UO Artist Racerback - Runs a little small, I'd rather have it bigger since the over-sized look is so in right now. But, it's appropriately creepy and looks great with cropped jackets.
Dolce Vita Wedges - Hey, I just wore these today! The strap on the back doesn't stay on my heel very well, but other than that these are really comfortable and incredibly chic looking. The grey is such an unusual color for me to wear, but it really matches a lot more than I thought it would.
Dolce Vita Flats - Ooh, flashy gold flats! I feel like I'm in Charlie's Angels or something. These are fun to wear with cropped pants and jeans, but I probably won't wear them much in the fall and winter.
Spendy Spendy post:
Nordstrom Diva Boots - These boots are sexy as hell and they fit like a glove. My only complaint is there isn't enough room in the calf to tuck in skinnies (and I have very slim calves). They look great with skirts though.
Betsey Johnson Lucite and Rhinestone Hoops - Fun and flirty, but I've only worn them once because they don't match a lot of things.
Juicy Couture Charm Bracelet - My fave bracelet. It's really well made and it's also a nice touch to a dressier outfit.
Halogen Corded Twill Jacket - This is what I'm rocking the military look for fall in. This jacket is gorgeous, even though the material is a little stiff. The buttons and shape are so unusual. It looks great with a ruffle-front white button-down shirt and skinny denim jeans.
Delias Berger Boots - Comfy but a little too "clompy" for my taste. I prefer my regular beaten up shit-kicker cowboy boots to these because they're a little heavy, but they do look fantastic with skinnies tucked into them.
Vintage goat pin from Ebay - Unusual enough to satisfy my love of all things quirky. It's actually really pretty in real life. I've worn it several times, and have met more than my share of admiration and concerned looks.
Turquoise Kitten Heel Shoes from Ebay - I have a thing for blue shoes. I probably shouldn't have bought these because they're nothing special and I have a scrillion pairs of blue shoes, but they're cute and simple.
L'Automne post
Anthropologie sweater - I think this sweater is worth the nearly $200 price tag. Even though slouchy sweaters are in for fall, I've not run across any that look like this. I love the material and the way it hangs on the body. It's unusual without being ugly. My new favorite sweater!
Payless Ankle Boots - These are very piratey, but still cute. I'm planning on wearing them with textured tights a lot.
MY NEW BAG! post
Marc Jacobs bag - Confession: the material on this was so incredibly cheap that I returned it immediately. This was a huge, I mean HUGE disappointment because I thought it was so adorable. I couldn't justify spending $148 on something so poorly made. Boo hoo. :-(

Fashion Victim 101
I'm not one to be mean or gossipy, but I couldn't keep this to myself any longer. No names will be mentioned, and I certainly won't say how I know this person, but I am gonna spill what matters. I see this girl quite often who makes me cringe for her bad fashion choices. Hey, I don't pretend to always dress perfectly. In fact, there are days where I roll out of bed, throw on a hoodie and head out the door. But when I make an effort, you can damn sure bet that I'll look awesome (I'm being confident, not conceited, I swear!).
However, this one girl just makes me want to pull her into a bathroom for a makeover...or call up Stacy and Clinton for some WNTW intervention. She is a classic fashion victim. She piles on every trend (and like a raccoon to a tin can, she loves glitter). She has no sense of what looks good or bad on her. So, at least she knows what's trendy, right? No. Like Susie Bubble once talked about knowing how to dress is a gift. I could read every fashion rag on the planet and still be clueless as to how to put an outfit together. I could wear every high-end label and still look like a fashion victim. Fashion isn't just about trendiness, it's also about confidence, knowing what looks good on you, creativity, a flair for the artistic, and that eponymous embodiment of "style" that women like Grace Kelly, Jackie O, Coco Chanel and Audrey Hepburn captured so well.
Now, I'm really not trying to be a bitch. This girl could be a lovely person, but it still doesn't stop me from wanting to yank her tacky gold sequined bag out of her hands and replace it with a nice structured handbag, or rearrange her news-anchorwoman coif into something more presentable. I'm like Cher in Clueless, perpetually on the look-out for a makeover project. And this girl is just pleading for my help (though she doesn't know it yet).

Latte or Fashion?
Hi, and welcome to High Fashion Girl's first installment of "Latte or Fashion?" - a DIY post! I am your host, High Fashion Grace. Ask yourself: could you give up a latte for 5 minutes of work and a swell piece of jewelry? If your answer is yes, then you've come to the right place. I'm going to show you how to make a gorgeous necklace for the fall in less than 5 minutes. Are you ready?
(Level of Ease: Infant)
Materials:
1/2 yard of black velvet ribbon
15 gold filligree beads
Scissors
*Items should be available at any local craft store
Determine how long you want your necklace to be (choker length, super long, cleavage length) and cut ribbon accordingly.

String the beads onto the ribbon.

Make sure that at least 1/2 of the ribbon is exposed. Beads should settle in the middle. To keep ends of ribbon from fraying simply "cauterize" them on top of your heated electric stove or (very carefully) with a lighter.
Now you're done! Tie prettily around your neck and wait for the gasps of "Where did you buy that?!"
For the price of a venti latte, you now have a gorgeous fall necklace!

Life is but a Dream, Sweetheart
So, did you score anything amazing at the Yoox sample sale? I hope so, because they had some pretty cool stuff there. Please share your bargains if you managed to get any!!
I've been cramping my little fingers to the bone since I was asked to write for Jargon Chicago. My first article is epic! So far, I've worked 5 hours on it, and it's all been research. I've hunted for every fall fashion bargain under the sun so that you can look your best for the least amount of money. Look for that in the upcoming week! I'll link to it once it is up.
I've also been working on a writing blog for my peers called The Writer's Co-op. I just completed the first publication of it online. Right now, the Writer's Co-op is in blog format, but I'm programming the actual website (which will be www.thewritersco-op.com) and it should be done in October. It will be an online magazine publication akin to that of stylusmagazine.com or mcsweeneys.net. The coterie of fine young writers I've put together never fails to impress me with their insight and intelligence. The second issue will be mind-blowingly awesome! I can't wait until I'm done with the site. :-D [Oh hey, and we take submissions. Just write submissions@thewritersco-op.com]
In other news, here is a plethora of new links that have been added to High Fashion Girl for you to check out! I also highlight some of my favorite new places to shop, so pay close attention to those! Happy Shopping (and Reading):

Online Sample Sale alert!
Head over to Yoox for their amazing sample sale. Prices are freakin' low! For example, I just scored a pair of Giorgio Armani black pumps that originally sell for $222 for only $40, a cashmere Charlott sweater for $80 that was originally $250, and a Dolce & Gabanna stole, originally $186, for $30. That's a savings of $508!!
Unfortunately, like most sample sales there are limited sizes and colors and they go fast, fast, fast. So head on over there now for some great deals. I wish I could fit a size four, because I'd buy these Sybilla pants in a heartbeat.

It's Not All About Anything
"It's all about ________," is a phrase I've heard ad nauseum. At first glance, the phrase is meant to encompass what certain thing is trendy or popular at the moment. "It" could be fashion, makeup, hairstyles, music, movies, etc. "It's all about leggings," "It's all about dramatic eyes and nude lips," "It's all about loose waves," "It's all about synthesizers," "It's all about post-modern endings." I'm getting a little tired of things being painted with such broad strokes. It's never all about any one thing. The remarkable thing about fashion, and the other aforementioned subjects, is that they're completely versatile. I could name about 20 different trends for fall, which at one time or another someone claimed each one was "All about..."
Okay, so I'm a little frustrated with careless language. Don't be mad! I'm a philosopher, and I've been reading a little too much Wittgenstein. I like things to be more precise, because it lends an air of intelligence and confidence to the situation. Saying "it's all about..." or "that's fierce," "that's hot," "that so now," etc., is so inarticulate. I adore fashion, and I love being able to talk industry with people on more than just a superficial level. To me, fashion is important in more ways than looking good and wearing labels. Fashion is also about art, it's an exercise in self-confidence, and a sociological microcosm ripe for examination.
So, I, High Fashion Girl, am declaring that using nonsense phrases like "It's all about (whatever)" is so over. ;-)

Vintage Fashion
Lately, I've become more obsessed than usual with vintage fashion. I have been reading books and websites about it in order to get more education on what started certain fashion movements, and what designers were popular in different eras. I must say that my favorites are now Elsa Schiaparelli (well, I've always adored her), Ossie Clark (read more here), Biba (Barbara Hulanicki), Mary Quant, Andrés Courrèges (inventor of the go-go boot), Marks & Spencer, Jacques Fath, Norma Kamali, and nearly everything "vintage" by Pierre Cardin, Vivienne Westwood, Betsey Johnson, Christian Lacroix, Pucci, Oscar de la Renta, Gucci, Chanel, and Christian Dior.
Check out some collectible pieces I recently found on ebay:

Mod 60's Pierre Cardin Jacket:

Rare Elsa Schiaparelli Couture Coat:

Don't these things just scream Audrey/Twiggy/Jean Shrimpton/Marianne Faithfull/Penelope Tree/Edie Sedgwick?
There are tons of treasures to be found on ebay, and for so cheap! What I found above is just a minute sampling. You can own vintage couture pieces by the eras top designers for, like, $30! I love ebay. :-)

Unusual Indie Pieces
Independent designers have really outdone themselves this season. The problem is, sometimes their pieces are so unusal that it's hard to imagine incorporating them into one's wardrobe. Here are some ideas for spicing up unusual indie pieces with other trendy fall pieces:

What it is: A Cream waffle-knit cotton babydoll dress, with obvious vintage elements. Created by designer Nami Ogawa for the ZETO Collection.
How I'd Wear It: This dress could easily look like a nightgown if not worn properly. I'd wear it with some screamingly bright red opaque tights, and sky-high patent leather mary janes.

What It Is: A cozy, oversized sweatshirt/poncho.
How I'd Wear It: With skinny jeans, and surprising accessories like chic little black vintage gloves.

What It Is: Super-high waisted tapered pants.
How I'd Wear It: Ooh this is a tough one. I'd pair it with this top from Zac Posen, and some bright red flats.

What It Is: Lightweight, navy blue wool hoodie with detachable sleeves.
How I'd Wear It: I'd wear my hair up with huge, gold, Chanel earrings, a grey pencil skirt, and knee high black leather boots.

What It Is: Grey Ant oversized jacket, with batwing style sleeves.
How I'd Wear It: With skin tight faded grey stovepipe jeans, fingerless gloves, and navy ankle boots.

What It Is: A Lauren Wells Fan Pleated Top
How I'd Wear It: With black satin opera gloves, a black satin high waisted pencil skirt, fishnet tights, and vintage Victorian boots.

What It Is: A Denim Ruffle Dress by Liza Rietz
How I'd Wear It: With gold flats, armfuls of gold bangles, and a dramatic scarf worn as a headband.

What It Is: Grey Leather Mini Vest by Gods and Monsters
How I'd Wear It: With a dramatic, white, ruffled top, Grey Johnson shorts, grey wool tights, and black ankle boots.

What It Is: Cross-Post Wrist Cuff by Twospace
How I'd Wear It: With a dainty lace vintage party dress, and lace-up black Doc Martens.

What It Is: Eventide Bubble Dress
How I'd Wear It: With an oversized silver Hermes ring, and silver and red leather knee-high boots.

Fashion Week: Coutorture Exclusive!
Coutorture has been granted all sorts of access to NYC's Fashion Week, and it's been exciting, as a blogger in the Coutorture community, to get so much behind the scenes access. So far, my favorite thing has been the interview between Julie (of Coutorture) and Cathy Horyn of the New York Times. Cathy extols the importance of blogging and the new media. You can watch the video below:
The Fashion World Starting To Come to Its Senses
Models flunk BMI, get Spain fashion boot
Spain's top fashion show has turned away a slew of models on grounds they are too skinny — an unprecedented swipe at body images blamed for encouraging eating disorders among young people.
Organizers of the pageant, known as the Pasarela Cibeles, used a mathematical formula to calculate the models' body mass index — a measure of their weight in relation to their height — and 30 percent of the women flunked, said the Association of Fashion Designers of Spain.
The association said Friday it wanted models at the show running from Sept. 18-22 to project "an image of beauty and health" and shun a gaunt, emaciated look.

Run, don't walk!
Neiman Marcus has some deeply deeply discounted designer bags right now. You won't find better bargains than this!! $138 for a Lauren Merkin Plum Lambskin Tote that was originally $395? Yes, please! These prices are worth getting into an internet scuffle over!
Plaid Tidings!
Maybe it's the fact that I'm part Scottish, or the fact that I love Monty Python's "Lumber Jack" song a little too much, or maybe it's the sight of Agathe looking adorable in an H&M tartan babydoll dress, but I have to say I'm mad about plaid this season. For some, this trend comes at a price: either the items are too expensive or not accessible to all (like all of the lovely H&M plaid items). I'm here to give you the best of both worlds.

Other Ideas
- Scrounge around in your dad's/boyfriends/grandfather's closet for a worn-in, oversized plaid shirt. Cinch at the waist with a glamorous belt, wear over skinny jeans and voila! The perfect fall outfit!
-Everytime I go to the thrift store I inevitably see something plaid that just screams "Vintage Chic!" Check out listings for thrift stores in your area in the yellow pages and start hunting!
-Ebay is always a good source for vintage standbys, but so are flea markets, goodwill.com, antique stores, and even your grandma's attic. Don't be afraid to look where you'd least expect it. That's where I've found some of my most amazing items!

Washington, Washington
I must confess, I have a huge George Washington fetish going on right now and it's all because of this video. The video is pretty much the most hilarious thing I've ever seen, but I must warn you: it contains swears.
I'm going to mimic George's cool style with this ruffly top:

and this military style jacket:

The perfect accessory to tie the look together? This:

Just kidding!

My friend Tiffany (Tiffybot) is awesome. She's a creative girl with talent in spades. Just take a look at what she can make:Tiffyshop.
The new "it" bag for the fall isn't the AC mini tote. No, no! It's the Lovebot tote, a Tiffy original:

You heard it here first.

Faking It
Here's a sneaky way to make it look like you're wearing the "it" fall ankle boots: wear mini-socks and pumps. The trick is, they both have to be monochromatic (all black, all grey, etc.) and the color has to be a close match.
Check out these (Target also has a great selection of plain-colored ankle socks) add a little bit of this and get an approximation of this.

The Perfect (Looking) Fall Sweater
Okay, once you've purchased all of your beautiful, slouchy, chic fall sweaters, a new question arises: how do I keep them looking gorgeous? Well, as slouchy as they might be, wrinkles are never an attractive prospect (unless you're talking linen and then it's just impossible to keep it wrinkle-free). So here are some tips for keeping your sweaters looking mannequin-worthy that I swiped from the January 2006 issue of Lucky magazine:
-Ironing works best, but the goal is to never actually touch the fabric. If you do, it can flatten and stretch the yarn fibers pemanently and leave an ugly shine. Get around this by turning the sweater inside-out and putting a damp cloth (white, so the color won't accidentally rub off on the item) between the garment and the iron. Gently press, lowering and lifting the iron instead of sliding it back and forth. Here's what settings you should use for best results: Acrylic - Cool iron (use a dry cloth), Cashmere - Steam, on medium heat, Wool - Same as above, and then gently knead the sweater afterward.
-Tip: You can use this same method to reshape shoulders that have been stretched by a hanger. Turn the top on its side and lie it flat so the shoulder (and the offending peak is facing straight up, and iron as above.

Honey, let's be friends
In an effort to remain accessible and completely non-snobby, I am extending the olive branch of friendship to my readers. I would really like to get to know you guys. It seems, sitting in front of my computer and typing out my opinions on fashion, that this could become a little narcissistic. Why does it matter what I have to say about anything? Basically, I adore fashion and just wanted to have an outlet for talking about it. Hardly any of my friends are into fashion, so I hit the internet in search of style fulfillment. This blog has brought me a lot of it. Do you have fun reading my blog? I hope so, because it's become something for other people instead of something just completely self-indulgent. Anyway, I want to know more about you guys (in a non-creepy way, I promise!). So, leave me a comment or drop me an email (indie_elitistatyahoodotcom) and we'll chat about life, fashion, or whatever the hell you want.
LOVE,
Grace

The Mind of a Genius
Here are some absolutely breathtaking photos of a recent fashion museum exhibit in Antwerp by Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto, aptly named "Dreamshop."
I was reading about the exhibit here and here, and the first article stated, "Thought of in two parts, this event will be a retrospective of the designer’s work and also a unique threefold experience of his creative work: visual, tactile and corporal." This is a very good way to describe the experience of viewing the dresses (I'd do almost anything to be able to see them in person!). I was stunned at the exquisite beauty of the exhibit, but at the same time taken by it's simple aesthetic. It's as if Yamamoto has the dresses come alive. They appear to be larger than life, hovering ethereally over the musuem, or quietly staring out of windows, floating, standing, posing, contemplating. It's as if they have been imbued with life. Look for yourself!

Special thanks goes to Perpendicular for her wonderful detective work!

Simpson Scandal Part Deux
Remember when I was bitching about Ashlee Simpson's effective duping of Marie Claire when she craftily disguised from all of the people at the MC photo shoot the nose job she had just gotten? [Insert tongue into cheek here.] Oh, that Ashlee. She's a wily one. And remember when the new editor of Marie Claire said that, "We’re dazed and confused — and disappointed — by her choice, too!" when the readers decried Ms. Simpson's slimmer nose and hypocritcal "love your bodies!" message? Yeah, well, that "expanded space" MC was allowing for the readers to vent their frustration became tantamount to 5 letters of complaint. I hardly believe this qualifies as expanded space to vent. Furthermore, it's STILL CLEAR THAT SHE HAD THE NOSE JOB PRIOR TO THE MC PHOTO SHOOTS.Why don't you address that subject, Ms. New Editor?
How many times do I have to repeat myself? (a lot I guess) You might be wondering why I'm bitching about this again instead of, um, doing French passe compose verbs (which you're right, I should be doing), but my original message still stands: "I don't think Ashlee Simpson needed the surgery, and while I don't applaud her choice, I don't condemn her for it. I am angered, instead, by the hypocrisy she's displayed and the negative influence it might have had on a generation of young women who are becoming more dissatisfied with themselves everyday." Oh yeah, and Marie Claire: we're not buying the bullshit.
