Fashion Rocks

What is Fashion Rocks? Well, for die-hard fashion fans, it's a dream come true. The launch of NYC's Fashion Week starts off with a star-studded concert called Fashion Rocks. In other words, it's a very cool approach to synthesizing music and fashion. This year, the concert is featuring performances by Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, Bon Jovi, The Black-Eyed Peas, Daddy Yankee, Jaime Foxx, Jay-Z, Elton John, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, The Pussycat Dolls, Rihanna, Scissor Sisters, Kanye West (and more). To see a webcast of the pre-party show, featuring Elton John, go here on Sept. 10 at 7 pm ET/4 pm PT. Get backstage access to one of the hottest pre-party shows in town, from the comfort of your own living room! This is your one chance to go to a party in your birthday suit! The coolest part is (besides being able to check it out sans attire) is that this is the only place where the footage can be viewed online! Furthermore, you'll get to be one of the first to check out the world premier of Elton John's songs from his upcoming album.

Weekend Round-Up!!

I'm sorry the traditional Friday Weekend Round-Up has fallen at the end of the le week-end. But here it is anyway! I rounded up some really great blog postings for you guys, just to make up for it.

Style Bubble dissects the fashion Hsiao Hsien Hou's film "Three Times." This is particularly exciting to me because he is in one of my favorite directors of all time.

Las Fashionistas teaches us a thing or too about the fine art of photo retouching, and a thing or too about boosting our self-esteem.

Girls Handbook gives some suggestions on how to wear the kimono trend.

Get inside La Voguette's makeup case.

Trashionista offers some ideas on affordable plaid.

Fashion Binge brings us a lengthy list of some terrific fall bags.

Almost Girl's funny but poignant self-reflection on fashion 'tude.

Closet Therapy offers three pretty ways to wear the chain trend.

Couture in the City's top sweater picks for fall.

Industry terms can be so confusing to us "outsiders." But, Fashion Incubator finally offers a detailed definition of "looks books," which up until now I thought meant "books that you look in."

Um, What: Part II:

Remember awhile back when I blogged about Payless really stepping it up in the fashion department? Well, they're still exceeding my expectations. This September they will be launching a line of shoes designed by Laura Poretzky from Abaete. The shoes, from what I've seen, are a stunning collection of D'orsay pumps, chic polka dotted heels, sweet ribbon wrapped flats, and more. I absolutely cannot wait!

Movies that Influence Your Style

Films tend to heavily influence my style choices. They fall into two categories: 1) Films with stylish actors that I attempt to imitate, like Audrey Hepburn, and 2) Films that put me in a creative mood which trickles down to fashion inspiration when I'm in said mood.

Here are some movies from each category that inspire me.

Stylish Leading Ladies (and Men):
1) Grace Kelly - Rear Window
2) Audrey Hepburn - Breakfast at Tiffany's, Charade
3) Cate Blanchett - Coffee and Cigarettes
4) Edie Sedgwick - Chelsea Girls
5) Thora Birch - Ghost World
6) Malcolm McDowell (Alex) - A Clockwork Orange
7) Scarlett Johansson - Match Point
8) Johnny Depp - Pirates of the Caribbean
9) Franka Potente - Run Lola Run
10 Audrey Tautou - Amelie
11) Elizabeth Taylor - Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
12) Sophia Loren - Two Nights with Cleopatra
13) Eva Amurri - Saved!
14) Winona Ryder - Heathers
15) Faye Dunaway - Bonnie and Clyde
16) Diane Keaton - Annie Hall
17) Penelope Cruz - Vanilla Sky (hated the movie, loved her style)

Creative Muse Films:
1) Last Year at Marienbad - surrealist French New Wave film by Alain Resnais
2) Hedwig and the Angry Inch - Written, Directed and Starred in by John Cameron Mitchell
3) Velvet Goldmine - Directed by Todd Haynes
4) Strictly Ballroom - Directed by Baz Luhrmann
5) Eraserhead - Directed by David Lynch
6) Hero - Directed by Yimou Zhang
7) Fight Club - Directed by David Fincher
8) MirrorMask - Directed by Dave McKean
9) The Adventures of Baron Munchausen - Directed by Terry Gilliam
10) Me and You and Everyone We Know - Directed by Miranda July
11) Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo? - Directed by William Klein
12) I Heart Huckabees - Directed by David O. Russell
13) Clueless - Directed by Amy Heckerling
14) Naked Lunch - Directed by David Cronenberg
15) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Directed by Michel Gondry
16) Survive Style 5+ - Directed by Gen Sekiguchi
17) Le Moutin Entragé - Directed by Michel Deville
18) Belle de Jour - Directed by Luis Bunuel

Please tell me some of yours!

I = Awesome

All of my friends know me first and foremost as a music buff, and second, as a movie buff. I'm crazy about Wes Anderson (he's my leading man), but I adore films by Woody Allen, Hsiao-Hsien, Sergio Leone, Sam Raimi, Terry Gilliam, Stephen Chow, Mel Brooks, Stanley Kubrick, Roman Polanski, Michel Gondry, John Woo, Sofia Coppola, Akira Kurosawa, and Todd Solondz - to name a few. Still, Wes Anderson remains the best in my opinion. Steve Zissou and the Life Aquatic is my favorite film of all time. This brings me to the best birthday present I ever received:

ZISSOU SHOES! For the first time ever, I'm the coolest kid on the block. I feel so special!

I Can Get Behind This

It's no secret that I'm not a very big fan of "young Hollywood." What, for some people, is an endless parade of pretty faces and entertaining headlines is, to me, pretty repugnant. I know that sounds horribly judgemental, but it irks me to see people with so many resources, talent and fame squandering it with selfish behavior. The only people I really like (for example: Zooey Deschanel) tend to be on the fringe, and never really exhibit the kind of bad behavior that has become synonymous with people like Lindsay Lohan. That being said, I don't ever really pay attention to what they're wearing, because the trends they follow aren't going to sway me one way or the other simply because they wear them. However, I ran across this picture of Mischa Barton and was pretty taken aback by how well-put-together her ensemble is. I know this might have a lot to do with how good her stylist is, but seriously, she looks very cute.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about the boots, but the rest of it is stunning. So much so, that for the first time ever, I might imitate a young "it" girl's style!

It's all about L'Automne

Autumn is my favorite time of the year. I've had a tradition since I was a very little girl to celebrate the arrival of fall. On the first day that I can smell autumn in the air (it has a distinct smell to me), I curl up in a cozy sweater and read a good book outside (preferably with a warm cup of tea by my side). I've been doing this since I was about 10, and for 13 years I've never failed to harken the coming season in this way. You've probably been able to tell that I adore the fall, since I've been talking about what I would buy for the upcoming season since July (here, here, and here.)

So far, I've purchased the majority of my fall wardrobe. For me it's been all about the oversized sweaters, leather boots, ankle boots, quirky bags and wide-leg pants. I've also noticed that I've been buying primarily purple, grey, and brown items. Those are my "it" fall colors. Off of my wishlists I've gotten:

(in black and brown)

Additional purchases are:
3 pairs of wide-leg trousers from the Gap
4 henleys (different colors)
2 v-neck slouchy sweaters
3 dresses
4 necklaces
2 pairs of earrings
8 bags
3 pairs of heels
and $140 worth of makeup at Sephora

However, I've found a few more eye-catching things to consider for the fall. Here they are:

What Your Attire Says About You

Hello loyal readers! I'm sorry that updates have been infrequent. This is my first week of classes and I've been running around getting books, changing my schedule and getting scholarship stuff sorted out. My schedule has changed a scrillion times since May, but I've finally settled on 17 hours (most of which are gen ed, booo!). The cool thing is I'm taking guitar lessons at my school (which is reknown for its music, theater and dance department). This will help me out a lot considering I'm now lead singer in a band!

Anyway, I was sitting in Public Speaking class today when the professor began lecturing about types of communication. The type that struck my interest was our use of "artifact language" which is a way of nonverbal communication that uses "artifacts" (apparel, jewelry, cars, etc) to convey information to others about ourselves. Our professor brought up the suit she was wearing. She said that the artifact language she was expressing may mean one thing to her and another thing to someone else. I scrutinized her outfit. She had a nice looking off-white suit on of indeterminable material and a light pink shirt on underneath. It was very summery, but ill-fitting. She had long hair that hung straight down and looked like it hadn't been trimmed in 2 decades. She had on no makeup and very sensible beige shoes. The outfit was, on the whole, not the terrible, but it wasn't very great. It made me think of her as kind of hippie-who-is-trying-to-appear-professional. But to her, it might have felt like something entirely different.

This got me thinking further about what we are saying with the clothes we choose to wear. So far, this semester, I've seen several girls just piling on the trends: obi belts + headbands + skull scarves + wedges, etc. I've always been partial to laid back, comfy and stylish clothes paired with really quirky accessories. I let the subtle things in my outfit make the biggest statements. What does this say about me? What does your attire say about you? Do you think the image you are attempting to portray is accurately perceived by others? I try to communicate that I am not uptight about clothing, but that I really enjoy fashion, especially the "independent" and unusal side of it. I wonder if it comes off like that?

All of this has made me give more serious consideration to what I wear. I'm sure if I were in a professional environment that it would be an even more important matter to me, but as of now I feel my job in getting dressed is to look my best, feel good about myself, and represent the ideas I put forward in this blog.

Simpson Scandal

I subscribe to Marie Claire and was irked about the same thing that seems to have pissed everyone else off. Their July issue featured Ashlee Simpson on the cover, with an article inside in which Simpson extols the virtues of good-self esteem and appreciating your body as it is. The only problem is, she had just had a nose job.

"Everyone is made differently, and that's what makes us beautiful and unique. I want girls to look in the mirror and feel confident," Simpson says in the article, but how are they supposed to do that when their role models don't practice what they preach?

The New York Times article states:
Marie Claire readers erupted in fury at what they said was Ms. Simpson’s hypocrisy and the magazine’s “cluelessness.” They wrote 1,000 letters in protest to the magazine, according to Joanna Coles, the new editor of the magazine. And she agreed with them.

In the first issue (due Aug. 15) over which she exercises full editorial control, Ms. Coles gives expanded space in the letters column to readers to vent against Ms. Simpson. Ms. Coles adds in a note: “We’re dazed and confused — and disappointed — by her choice, too!”

This doesn't make sense to me. It's clear in the cover and article's pictures that she had a nose job prior to publication. If Marie Claire is, "dazed and confused — and disappointed — by her choice, too" then why did they lend credence to her choice by running an article all about her and her amazing self-esteem?

I'm not particularly fond of plastic surgery, though I do see its necessity and benefits for those who are disfigured, injured or need it for emotional and mental health reasons. I disagree with its usage by persons under the age of 21 (what 16 year old needs lunchtime liposuction?), because your body hasn't even completely developed until at least that age. I disagree with its use in a vain competition to appear younger and more desirable. I think this plays into the horrendous and twisted expectations society has for aging women (but doesn't hold for aging men). I don't think Ashlee Simpson needed the surgery, and while I don't applaud her choice, I don't condemn her for it. I am angered, instead, by the hypocrisy she's displayed and the negative influence it might have had on a generation of young women who are becoming more dissatisfied with themselves everyday.

Free Stuff!

Remember awhile back when the Allison Burns Faithful bag and Duwop Lip Venom were all-the-rage? Both of those companies steadily increased productivity and became top quality accessories and beauty lines, respectively. These guys weren't one-hit-wonders, if you know what I mean. Coutorture is now offering two fabulous giveaways for 3 Allison Burns handbags AND 20 sets of Duwop's aHands2Hair, a DuWop Toe Polish, and their new Browwow Brow Kit. All you have to do is enter your email address to win! Sha-wing!

Style Slump

This HFG admits to having less than "high fashion" moments. I wish I was a couture queen. I wish I lived in NYC and had access to all of the amazing stores there. I wish that I didn't fall into slumps of never liking what I have and always wanting new (read: more expensive) things.

Today, I hit a major style slump when I went to visit the Paul & Joe collection at Target. I was hoping it wouldn't be too picked over, but it was. I was grabbing things with a sense of desperation and throwing them into my cart, caught in a feverish emotion that kept whispering, "if you don't buy it now, it will all be gone soon." Since, I hate trying on clothes in dressing rooms, I usually just buy what I like and return it later if it ends up not fitting. After snatching up clothes like a 1980's mother who has just encountered a store's last Cabbage Patch doll, I sheepishly sifted through my basket and pared it down to stuff I really liked...which wasn't much.

I got home, and hated everything that I bought except for the leggings. Weird. I can't believe I succumbed to that trend and actually liked it. Oh, fashion, you fickle mistress! I'll be returning everything else tomorrow.

I learned an important lesson: don't buy things just because they're there. This manic urge to buy an Old Navy track jacket because it $0.97 or random thrift store items that I'll never ever wear is just absurd. From now on, I'm going to shop in my own closet before I got out. Spending some time in my closet(s) means that I get a refresher course on what fabulous items I already own, and also gives me an opportunity to attempt unique combinations of clothes I might not have thought of before.

So, as fall approaches, I'll continue to whittle down my list of fall essential "must haves" until I get the right balance of quality, style, trend and items that will blend well with what I already have.

Consider the lesson learned!
