New jewelry site added!

I urge you guys to check out Peggy's amazing line of jewelry over at Peggy Li jewelry. She's a fellow makeupalley boardie - so I happen to know that the girl has style. Her line also possesses my three requisites: fashionable, fun and affordable.

Go ye forth and shop!

Forever 21 jewelry

I got this yesterday from Forever 21, for a total of $20. You just can't beat their prices!

I couldn't resist

Here are some items I made today:

Mixed Media necklace with a bone tooth and a carrot bead on it:

Mod earrings?:

The picture of all the other earrings I made didn't turn out so well. Will retake and post tomorrow!

OOD: Two ways

I wore this outfit with the white shirt and vest in the morning:

White Shirt: Ann Taylor
Leather vest: thrift store
Nude fishnets: Hue
Loafer wedge boots: Urban Outfitters
Purse: Etienne Aigner
Heart necklaces: Antique store
Skirt: Gap (eek! looks huge in the second photo - because it's in the forefront, i imagine)

Had to change to this outfit in the afternoon after spilling some lunch on the first one:

Black ruffled shirt w/ cap sleeves: Mossimo
Rest of the outfit is the same

Exhausted!

I spent 5 hours making jewelry. I made 10 pairs of earrings from gorgeous vintage beads, 1 necklace and 2 bracelets. I'll upload pictures tomorrow. I also spent an hour dismantling a beaded curtain that had vintage beads on it that were simply stunning. I rescued it from being thrown away. There has to be over $200 worth of beads on there too, and they're the really nice kind. It was really tedious, though.

Fashion blogging will resume after my hands uncramp. ;-)

Shopping Finds for this week:

I got some great stuff at the thrift store today!

1) AUTHENTIC Burberry Classic Scarf for $1.48 (don't ask me how I do it ladies, it's like I gots the Midas touch or something)
2) Christian Dior cardigan
3) Vintage Etienne Aigner genuine leather handbag (perfect condition!)
4) Red polyester skirt with belt
5) Kelly green "Tally Ho" vintage wool cropped jacket with gold buttons
6) Soft grey t-shirt with sharks all over it
7) Woody Nelson concert t-shirt ($1!)
8) Yellow vintage (80's?) leather wristlet purse
9) Gold 3-chain necklace with gorgeous turquoise and gold pendant ($1.98!)
10) Vintage tennis bag. It's so cool looking that I'm going to take up tennis just so I have an excuse to carry it around.
11) Vintage tweed hobo (perfect condition!)

And yesterday at Ross I found:

1) Dark blue Levi's bootcut jeans (I got these for $10. There was no tag on it, but the other jeans of the same style in that section were about $30, but these were the only ones in my size. Since it didn't have a price tag the sales girl went to find a pair of the same jeans, but she went to the clearance section and grabbed a pair that weren't even the same and rang my pair up for the clearance price!)
2) A gorgeous spring dress that looks almost identical to the Nicole Miller Brown Floral Silk Ruffle Dress in the "Feminine Form" post below. Didn't have the ruffle but is pretty much the same dress.
3) Turquoise and brown paisley patterned top.
4) Ivory dress skirt.
5) Black and ivory "boho" skirt with random sequin embellishments.
6) Grey v-neck top with sequins along the "v" part.

I usually never go to Ross, but on a whim I went yesterday and found so much cool stuff. The best part is, everything I got was between $5-10 each. They had some great purses but I didn't buy any. I have my eye on a Maxx New York purse that typically retails for over $100 and it was about $30 at Ross. Maybe I'll go back for it.

DIY Jewelry

These are some earrings I made with vintage beads last week:

Gar! The picture really doesn't do these beauties justice.

And a necklace I copied from a magazine (using much cheaper beads):

Update: I wasn't too happy with how the necklace turned out because I didn't like the way the plastic beads looked when mixed with real wood and glass beads, so I'm dismantling this necklace and swapping the plastic for real turquoise stones. I think it will make the look a lot more high-class.

Jewelry Haul

This is about half of what I got recently when shopping for vintage jewelry. Some of the pieces are for resale and some I'm keeping.

Unfortunately, the pictures don't really do justice to how cool some of the stuff is. Two of my favorites are the owls. I also really love the nautical earrings I got. It came with a matching necklace too (not pictured). The best part is, I got all of it for under $40 total. I love antique stores and thrift stores!

The Feminine Form

The spring season has heralded a return to really girly clothes. Shlumpy peasant frocks are a thing of the distant past and layered boho should be worn with caution. The runways and shops are overflowing with floral spring dresses, lace and crochet - the daintier the better. Though "girly" isn't really my thing, there are some pieces that caught my eye:

Nieves Lavi Libelulle Silk Print Dress £265.00

They're also completely affordable. And best of all they have comics! (Though that area of the site is currently under construction) I definitely reccomend perusing their merchandise.

Outfit of the Day (OOD)

Hopefully I can start posting pictures of my OOD's, but I'll describe the one I wore today:

*AE distressed boot-cut jeans
*Black crochet inlay tank from Old Navy
*Black short, puff-sleeved jacket from Banana Republic (I snagged the last one in Oklahoma last season!)
*Red pointy-toe shoes from Chinese Laundry
*Glenda Gies Handbag with Vintage Cloth exterior. This was originally $240, and I got it for $36!! 85% off!! This is probably the most gorgeous bag I own and though I've had it two years I've only used it once before.
*Blue and gold bauble necklace (long) on sale at Dillards

Since it was cold out I also wore a Jones New York Black wool long pea-coat and a gorgeous red knit scarf to go with my shoes! It was a fun outfit.

Bargains! (Nothing over $40!)

There's something so rewarding about waiting until something that you really like goes on sale. I decided to highlight some great items that are now much more affordable!

Ambiance SF is one of my favorite places to shop in Northern California. Their online boutique is well-stocked, affordable and offers free shipping on all purchases over $50. One item I've had my eye on is this sexy flutter-sleeve top with lace inset - now a mere $24!

This item is really unique as far as cardigans go. I'm really digging the kimono-inspired design ($29):

Sean Combs, or as his more familiar incarnation is called, P. Diddy, has a line of women's clothing that ain't too bad. I've had my eye on the humorous gold-foil "Daddy's Rich" t-shirt, now $19.

Daddy's rich t-shirt

This "Hippie" shirt by LaRok has been marked down from $147. It would look smashing under a black jacket. ($37)

Check them out!

The Skull Issue

I am deeply committed to "skull" fashion. I have skull shoes, bags, jewelry, sweaters, t-shirts and tank-tops. Knowing that skull fashion trends are on the rise, I thought I'd comprise a list of some of the coolest skull items on the market.

This tiny picture doesn't do this necklace justice. Unfortunately, the necklace itself is unlinkable but go to Alex and Chloe and find the "Diamonds are Forever" necklace ($111):

Hoo Haaa! I likes this. It makes me happy. ($26):

So over it!

The endless parade of high-end bags (like the Balenciaga motorcycle bag, Kooba Sienna, Mulberry bag, Chloe Paddington, Louis Vuitton logo bag, Bliss Lau Cymbal bag, Hermes Birkin bag, Botkier trigger bag, Marc Jacobs multi-pocket hobo, etc.) can be found on the arms of every celebrity. The wait list for these bags can go months, even years in some cases. All of them come with jaw-dropping price tags. Designers Mike & Chris are surely next in line for the must-have bag of the season:

Though I find these bags beautiful, I can in all honestly say I never want to own one. I think I'd be on the verge of suicide if I spilled wine on $6000 Fendi Spy Bag, and can never consciously spend that much money on something that carries my wallet, lipstick and keys. What I'm in the market for is a unique bag, preferably one that's large, that has interesting details and an affordable price tag.

For instance, this "Mascot" bag by Helles Belles is completely unique. It lacks the sleek sophistication of the aforementions Birkins and Paddingtons, but still it's a head turner. Plus, it's priced at a reasonable $52:

For a more girly, dainty take on things, this bag by Emma Gordon of London is good for dressing up ($70):

I love the color of this bag and the tassel. Plus, the cost is nothing to sniff at ($19.99):

For a look that's hardware-meets-downtown chic, I'd reccomend this bag by Amici Accessories. Bonus: It bears resemblance to the Marc Jacobs multi-pocket hobo!($50):

For some old-school glamour with a twist, this bag by Grace Glorieux is perfect ($45.60):

For a kissing cousin to the Balenciaga Motorcycle bag that boasts the sophistication but not the price, try the Ambiance SF Faux Leather Two-Handle Bag ($45):

France offers a gorgeous tote by way of La Redoute ($44.99):

This painted disc tote by Urban Outfitters has my name written all over (not literally, but...you know!) ($38):

A Weighty Discussion

It is projected that by the year 2050 over 95% of Americans will be overweight or obese. America is the fattest nation in the world, with weight gain as a growing epidemic (pun intended). Currently, 61% of Americans are overweight or obese, and that number keeps rising. Furthermore, being overweight contributes to the three major medical concerns: Type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and heart attack. The more technology advances, the more sedentary we become. Simple household tasks that we used to perform for ourselves just a couple of decades ago are now done for us: we have machines to wash our cars, wash our clothes and wash our dishes. We have people to walk our dogs for us, clean our houses, and mow our lawns. We have increasing crime rates that keep us driving our cars instead of walking or riding a bike to our destinations. We have portion sizes that have doubled in the past few decades, advertisements for sugary, simple-carb laden sweets flashed at our children in an endless parade, we have less time to cook at home, and little knowledge of what comprises a truly nutritious meal.

What I'm saying is: the future for our waistlines is bleak, not to mention the future for our hearts and lungs and cardiovascular systems. Yet, "fat" is the final frontier in prejudice and bigotry. While it is completely taboo to make fun of someone's race, religion or sexual orientation it is accepted as the norm to make fun of someone's weight. Research studies have shown that overweight women are treated more poorly by sales staff, and even are judged as being "unworthy" if they are romantically involved with a thinner man. The fashion industry too is guilty of exclusivism - making clothing that only women size 12 (and sometimes 10) and lower can fit into. This ignores the majority of American women who are larger than a size 12. Fashion is a snobby club that only the fit can be a part of.

There are brands made specifically for plus-size women like Layne Bryant, Catherine's, and Audradella. Old Navy, Target, H&M, Wal-Mart, the Gap and Torrid are chain stores that carry clothing for plus-size women. However, a plus-size woman who is interested in higher-end items will never find her size in Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Chloe, Dolce and Gabbana or anything of the like. The fashion industry approaches the topic with disdain. Their mentality is that they don't want anyone who is plus-size to wear their clothing because the designer's clothing is a representation of the designer. Why is this okay? This self-reportedly liberal and accepting group of individuals (fashion designers) who accept people of all races, religions and sexual orientations closes the door firmly in the face of plus-size women. This is completely hypocritical.

The startling truth is that in the near future everyone will be overweight if something is not done. If we do not reform our sedentary lifestyles and our poor eating habits the fashion industry will cease to exist. While I advocate weight loss, I do acknowledge the plus-size women out there who simply can't help their weight. Women who have polycystic ovary syndrome, hypothyroidism, genetic dispositions towards weight gain, and post-pregnancy weight are among a group of women disenfranchised by the fashion industry who can do nothing to remedy it themselves.

I think that tolerance should be had on the part of the fashion industry. They need to accept people of all shapes and sizes, and make clothes for their enjoyment too.

Women also need to be mindful of their health. Who cares what people think about you? People are mean and speak ill of others all of the time, so why let it affect you? Women should learn to love themselves completely and without regard to the judgement of others because people will always be judgemental. Lose weight because it will make you healthier. Lose weight because you want to do something good for yourself. Don't lose weight for your significant other or because someone made fun of you. Don't do it for the wrong reasons! Accept yourself as being unique and beautiful, love yourself and your body, and love the fact that being healthy means a longer life on this earth to enjoy the multitudinous changes the fashion world will see before you die. That's motivation!

The "price" of fashion

I have a noble professor that teaches my liberation theology class. He lives a very spartan lifestyle and only makes the occasional splurge - but, this splurge comes with a stipulation. He donates the equal value of whatever he is buying to a worthy cause. For example, when he bought a new laptop he also saved up enough to donate the cost of the laptop (approximately $1,500) to a school in South America. This is the principle I hope to apply to my "fashion" purchases.

While fashion is an interest of mine, I am not the type to vacuously flip through Vogue and slap down my plastic for whatever catches my interest. Instead, I have implemented a new rule: for every item I buy, I have to donate an item in my closet of equal or higher value, or donate money that is the same cost as the item to a worthy cause. We live in a land of excess. I own more stuff than I even have room for. Instead of accumulating material possessions with no thought to the lives of other people in this world - I hope to become more conscious of my spending habits, and even be able to give back.

This brings me to socially conscious purchases. There are lots of lines of clothing that are sweatshop free or that donate percentages of money from the purchase of their item to different charities. Next time you want to splurge, consider buying something from one of these guys:

No Sweat UK
Tonic T-shirts
Bad Kitty Clothing
Outspoken Clothing
American Apparel
Edun Clothing (Bono's fashion apparel line)
Positivitee

Or support socially conscious independent online stores like Anti-Factory, Stars and Infinite Darkness, and Miele Fresca (see side panel for links).

Go forth and shop!

"Hot" Couture

Lucky magazine had these shoes featured in it recently. They're Marc by Marc Jacobs. Tell me these aren't worth knocking over a gas station for! ($322):

Any time I see something in a fashion magazine that makes my heart skip a beat or two, it's inevitably a design by Tracy Reese. Her clothes are bold, yet feminine, flowing and graceful. I am particularly fond of this dress right now ($438):

The ultimate in luxe, by one of my favorite shoe designers, Constanca Basto ($549):

A new twist on the Fendi Spy Bag that I adore ($6,040):

The perfect spring tunic by Mara Hoffman($245):

I love this color combination ($298):

So adorable! ($350):

Startling and dramatic - must have! ($282):

Okay, maybe it's a little ridiculous, but for some reason I'm drawn to it ($189):

The shape! The color! The oddness of it. It's the quirky things in life that make me happy. Also I'm a huge fan of the designer, Bi La Li ($551)

I'm noticing a pattern here. ($289)

These Jeweled Metallic Thong Sandals by Manolo Blahnick are simply stunning ($830):

Utilitarian French Belt Inspires Frantic Search for Euros

French Touche is an amazing online store. The only downside is, it's entirely written in French, and the Euro is currently valued much higher than the American dollar. Thus, items that appear reasonably priced, after conversion, are astronomical.

However, I'm pining for belts and this one is amazing.

Where did I put all of my euros?

(Link to French Touche is in side links list)

$220 Spring Wardrobe Re-vamp

Ok, let's imagine that you have an extra $220 lying around, or maybe more idealistically that you've saved $220 to splurge on the new spring trends. Well, let me see if I can pick out some stuff that's fashionable but won't break your bank. I will attempt to incorporate some of the major spring trends: white, crochet, flowy spring dresses, and wedges. My suggestions:

* Let's head into this feet first. I'm not a huge fan of the wedges, but these are exactly perfect, in my humble opinion. Plus, the $78 price tag isn't so scary if you use the "toutie" coupon at check out for a bonus 20% off:

Seychelle Inheritance Wedges Link

* Crocheted and white? This bag is a double-threat ($14.99):

Merona Crochet Bag Link

* Next up, we've got bermuda shorts. These are leaner in the leg, so they won't look like your legs are two sticks poking out of the end of billowing, ill-fitting shorts. These are also perfect to pair with gladiator sandals (see next item) or those darling Seychelle wedges (above). At $10.49 a pair, you could afford to get all available colors. But let's stick with simple khaki for now.

Mossimo Bermuda Shorts Link

* Perfect for shorts, skirts and even a casual dress, these gladiator sandals are versatile and perfect to wear into the summer ($16.99):

Xhileration Tovah Gladiator Sandals Link

* A pretty spring dress that can be worn on it's own, with capris or slim-fitting jeans underneath and with sandals or wedges! The price tag ain't too bad either $48.50):

Delia's Amanda Dress Link

* A crocheted shrug is the perfect way to round-out any spring outfit ($16.99):

Old Navy Pointelle Shrug Link

* Fabulous jewelry? Hard-to-find designer? Nabi Designs is where I found these breath-taking earrings ($45):

Nabi Luna Earrings Link

Ok, let's see:

Wedges: $62.40 (after coupon)
Bag: $14.99
Shorts: $10.49
Sandals: $16.99
Dress: $48.50
Earrings: $45
Shrug: $16.99

= $215.36!! Just enough left-over to buy an iced latte.

New Botkier = Lust!

I'm not usually a fan of orange, but that bag is monstrous (which I love) and so vibrant. Grechen's Closet is offering a 20% discount on it, but still that makes it $432 instead of $540. Quick! I need $400!

Commentary:

I know that some of these items aren't very "springy" but I've never really been one to follow the season's trends. I don't do pastels in the spring time and fall colors in autumn. I like unique pieces that stand out - pieces that complete strangers will compliment me on. So far, these are the ones I like best and hope to get in the near future.
